Backtray Installations
Why do I need a Backtray for my roof?
Backtrays are a vital component contributing to the protection of your roof throughout it’s lifetime. Backtrays provide essential protection against common water ingress at junctions between the roof line and roof penetrations ranging from ventilation pipes, electrical wiring, solar panels, whirlybirds, and any location in which a penetration has been created in your roof.
The purpose of a Backtray, is to minimise the risk of water access into your roof cavity from a penetration, ensuring backtrays are installed is critical to divert water away from a penetration into neighbouring sheet pans to allow water to find its way to the gutter system.
Penetrations through roof sheets need to be carefully considered, with a common mistake being made of only having a “Dektite” installed without a Backtray. This is just not enough protection, and Dektites commonly block the natural flow of water to the relevant sheet pan. This contributes to premature erosion and eventually water will find it’s way into the cavity once the seal has broken. Water typically builds up behind the penetration and with nowhere to go, water will eventually flood the lap of the sheet without sufficient drainage. “Water cuts through rock, not because of its strength, but because of it’s persistence” With that in mind, water has no problems cutting through silicone and rubber over years of Canberra’s harsh weather conditions.
Simply, The Backtrays job is to allow water to divert around the penetration without touching the Dektite, or going near the penetration, therefore preventing deterioration and future leaks when the silicone and Dektite have given out.
How many Backtray’s should I have?
Backtrays should be installed for pretty much every roof penetration. You can jump on Google Earth to view your roof and count how many “penetrations” you have. Backtrays are priced in linear meters, and will extend from the penetration to the top of the ridge line.
Do I need a Dektite installed?
Dektites are a must, and are installed on top of the Backtray and included in the Backtray package pricing. Roofing Tech will remove the old Dektite, before cleaning the previous silicone applications and replace with a brand new Dektite installed on top of the Backtray.
No Leaks.
The primary function of a backtray is to prevent water from leaking into the roof structure at points where the roof meets vertical surfaces.
Weather Resistant.
During heavy rainfall, wind-driven rain, or frost, backtrays provide an essential defense against water penetration, which can lead to significant structural damage over time.
